You comment I follow, but why ?
June 11th, 2007 by alexToday I decided to join the “U comment I follow” campaign started by Randa Clay and I have some good reasons for that. “U comment I follow” is a campaign which is getting bigger and bigger in blogoshpere and where all is about bloggers removing the nofollow attribute for their comments links.
I have made this step with my blog - removed the nofollow for the comments links - because of 2 mainly reasons. First of all I want to show that I appreciate my commentators and give them a link to their site / blog for each comment that they write on my blog and secondly because this is a great way to gain your readers confidence, convert more readers into commentators and of course increase your readers number.
If you want to be apart of the “U comment I follow” campaign you can use a plugin that removes the nofollow attribute (Dofollow by Semiologic) and be sure you place a “U comment I follow” image in your sidebar, in this way your readers will know that their comments are appreciated.

I had heard of this movement of ‘do-followers’ and I must agree with your reasons. Those are the most prominent reasons for applying this campaign. Although at the same time 9/10 comment writers would not even notice the no follow attribute unless it was explicitly stated when you post the comments. So in the end I guess it comes down to a more personal level. do you want to give your “link juice” to your readers? It is fully possible that the readers will reciprocate a link back to your site, but then there is no guarantee of that: is there?

Great campaign. Glad you found it as well Alex. And in regards to most people not knowing about the “No Follow” attribute. Most commentators are bloggers themselves, so if they’ve been around for more then a few months, I’m sure they know by now.

I also joined the campaign and removed the no-follow from my blog. I think this is a sign of appreciation for my loyal readers, who take time to give me their thoughts. So far, I did not notice any SEO spammers to abuse my blog, but I heard of some other cases when bloggers were flooded with such spammy comments.

@listikal: You are right, most of commentators are bloggers and they are aware about the nofollow attribute.
@Mark & shman: I am glad you liked the campaign’s idea and also happy that you joined.
@Simonne: I didn’t noticed an increase in spam until know, only the regular - lol.

I have to say that this is an impressive plugin. I think it has brought a lot more connection between bloggers and I know personally I have found a lot of blogs like yours that I may never have found. What do you think will happen to this movement?

Well, I take this as one of the way of rewarding the readers. Be it in any form, either link love or it can be some gifts etc.
I think it is useful to reward readers, I’ve gained lot of traffic myself and lots of comments too! I don’t use DO FOLLOW, but I rewarded in some other fashion

I took off the nofollow on my blog because I think it makes sense in the Web2.0 world of “community.” Although I don’t think it does anything for me or my blog directly, indirectly it does a lot:
Have you noticed much change in traffic or commenting in your blog since you took off the nofollow?

I haven’t been part of the Do Follow campaign but I was planning on doing so. Hopefully this will help everyone getting more backlinks.

This is an interesting campaign. I always like to see people within the community taking initiative and taking marking and blogging itself in a new direction.

I’d be totally willing to remove the “nofollow” from my comments - but is that even possible with blogger? I haven’t looked into to it too closely yet.

Hi Josh, here is an interesting article about removing with Blogger.

Good to hear. When my blog launches, I will be joining the dofollow movement.

When I first started seeing the image, I used to think that it meant you comment on my blog, and i’ll comment on yours!

At first I thought nofollow was a good idea but I have changed my mind on that. My blog now follows links. After a long time procrastinating I have seen the importance of “dofollow” and making sure everything stays connected and links don’t get broken. I will follow comments on my blog, http://www.reallyreally.net I hope more people adopt these principals. Regards Bree.

Though I like the idea of links for commentators, there is one big problem - spam. Spammers now focus on dofollow blogs, which make it harder. Also, unless you hand moderate comments, it is impossible to filter them out completely.

Sumesh, I am sure you can if you use some good plugins

I’ve added the logo to my blogs last night. I’ve already been following my links. I just didn’t advertise the fact. I think the logo is a good idea because it shows people that you welcome their comments.
I have noticed some sites where the logo is displayed but when you look into the source code the nofollow is still there. I think this is partly to do with some people thinking that displaying the logo itself removes the code, or am I just being too naive?

I am also in the process of getting this up and running,
No follow is just the best concept and should be standard
by default in all wordpress installations.

Good idea.I like it very much
Shall implement it in my blogs too.
