How to get good traffic WITHOUT Google ?
January 28th, 2007 by alexI have recently read an thread on a forum about this question “How to get good traffic WITHOUT Google ?” and it was really interesting to see what other people think about this. There are many opinions and thoughts about this question and some of them are controversial and I thought I should share some of them…
Basically, If you’re out of google, you’re out of business!
Well I don’t think like that, as the matter of fact I think that is dangerous to run a business based only on search engine traffic. It is true that a big part of traffic comes from search engines but this shouldn’t be the only option.
If you build good back links, and do some great link exchanges with other related high PR sites. you might get a lot of traffic without Google.
Doing link exchanges or buying links on related HIGH traffic sites can get some traffic though I believe SE traffic is best.
Posting on forums with high traffic is also a good idea and I shouldn’t forget about social bookmarking sites (ie digg, del.icio.us, reddit, etc.)
Google is a distant third for my traffic.
Yahoo 58%; MSN 26%; and Google 10%.
Has I said before there are many opinions and my final thought is that you should consider getting traffic from search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN) and you should also try other methods because nothing wrong will happen.
And because this is about questions I would be glad to now if you think is a good idea or a bad idea for web sites to count on traffic only from Google.

I don’t really think Google or search engines is the best way to get traffic most of my traffic comes from related gaming sites. Although I have had a few visitors from google but I think that Google is not really the answer to be honest.

No Google - no traffic !
There was a young lady on the net,
who went out for the ride without google.
When she returned from the ride,
With her traffic “inside”, and a smile on the face of the GOOGLE!

Well I must say I really like the way you pointed out your opinion…

The new version of Prognoza’s reflection is:
“There was a new site of some people,
Who went out for a ride on the google.
When they returned from the ride,
With the new site inside,
…and a smile of the face of the GOOGLE!”
So, my personal reflection is:
“Don’t go uot for a ride on Google!
You will end in the big gorge of the Goggle!” :))

U need google for search…..you can get links from other blogs but u dont get normal readers from other blogs who will click your add…..you get bloggers. So if you want natural searches being made into ur blog….you need it.

Well, I don’t think like that… I mean if you have a link on a blog who says that the only people that will click that link are bloggers ?
And what about social bookmarking, those are normal users… also

Any kind of link exchanging helps. Right now 20% of my visitors come to read a tutorial and I’m kinda the only one having this tutorial. So make sure you have unique content too.

I think that any normal person would love to diversify their dependence on the big ‘G’. Unfortunately it’s like a old girlfriend that you can’t get rid of. I think Social Bookmarking and Forums are great sources of traffic but are they stable enough and consistent enough and would you depend on them.
To a certain degree I agree with Ashish. Google funnels visitors that are different from other types. Of course I don’t want to be reliant on Google but boy I love it when they are loving me.

Yes, backlink and link exchange can bring traffic but the real horse is GOOGLE.

The problem with Google traffic is that you hold little control of it. Many times, for no apparent reason, sites drop from the rankings only to return again. If your traffic is dependant on Google it is effectively gone during these periods. By diversifying your sources of traffic you protect yourself.

You have a strong point there, Google traffic is always welcome but you never should count only on it.

Found your site through Google. Current indications are that around 80% of my traffic comes through Google organic search and believe it or not - I run a business on that.
I think the stats don’t necessarily reflect how the search engines regard your site, rather they show which search engines people favour - in this case I’d say most people use Google and things are going to stay that way fora while I think.

My first time here, and here are my $0.02
I have to say that I am a google believer and IMHO google are able to set the internet rules now but that doesn’t have to last.
All that being said I’ve been blogging for almost 2 years and 80% of my traffic are referrals and not organic.
However, in organic, about 95% of that are from google.
